me at Kinderdijk |
The Netherlands is home of world class tulips and historical windmills. Because The Netherlands is a country situated in approximately seven meters below sea level, these windmills were built to keep water out of the polder to many areas, and one of these places is the Kinderdijk.

we used to be only two that time :) |
In time, technology helped the Dutch people to build modern infrastructure to prevent the country safe from flooding. And they are world famous because it this strategy.
Me and my husband went in Kinderdijk. Kinderdijk lies in Alblasserwaard, province of South Holland, the same province where I am living now. We traveled by car almost an hour going there.

It was a wonderful trip. The place is very quiet, only few people were there with us. Some visitors were on their bikes. Many wildflowers, ducks in the water, and the birds are singing. What makes Kinderdijk worth your visit?
Kinderdijk is a unique collection of 19 authentic windmills. These windmills were built way back 1738 and 1740. This place, the Kinderdijk would have flooded if without these windmills. When we were there, I saw some men doing some repair to one of these very old windmills.

Because of its history, these windmills are considered as a Dutch icon throughout the whole world. These windmills became a national monument and a protected area since 1933. And on 1997, Kinderdijk was included in UNESCO World Heritage.

If you are reading this and you are living here in The Netherlands, maybe you have already visited Kinderdijk. If not, you can plan to visit this place, it would be a wonderful experience. If you are not living here in The Netherlands, and planning to visit this country in the future, you can list this place in your itinerary. It is very different from what a city sight can offer you. Touring around the Kinderdijk will give you some insights into how the ancient Dutch people battled to keep their place safe and dry. Please enjoy again viewing my photos that I have made in Kinderdijk.
I think if I ever visit the Netherlands I would want to go here.
